Gender Reveal — He, She, They, We are all just humans.

Images & text by Sue Barr

In this project, I asked each subject to choose their favorite “safe place” and to show up as to who they are (their choice). I am exploring with the viewer, the ever-evolving landscape of self-presentation, where gender becomes another vibrant brushstroke in the canvas of identity. As a documentary and lifestyle photographer, I'm intrigued by how individuals navigate and express their gender identity in today's society.

Saylor & Finn — Partners

From traditional gender norms to fluid and non-binary identities, I have found a whole spectrum of experiences waiting to be explored. Through my lens, I am documenting the nuances, challenges, and triumphs of society’s acceptance of each individual. It's about celebrating the freedom to express oneself authentically, adding to the rich tapestry of human diversity.

Lucky — Finding their essence

So, let's shine a spotlight on the myriad ways people embrace and embody their gender identity. Whether it is through fashion, body language, or personal narratives, each individual adds their unique hue to the mosaic of gender expression. My wish is that my imagery provides empowerment, resilience, and self-discovery, paving the way for greater understanding and acceptance in our society.

You can have all the professional and personal accomplishments in the community as a sis gender yet still not be able to achieve genuine inner happiness. I mean look at the poster child for this movement, Bruce Jenner’s transition to Caitlin, or more recently Eliot Page’s transition from Ellen.

Brianna is still a she

It’s not about one’s sexual attraction ( although it’s sometimes obvious) or a political or religious statement on one’s beliefs but a simple exploration of what makes a person feel authentic.

Finding the one

Medical breakthroughs and pharmaceutical exploration as well as public figures, who have been publicly brave enough to reveal their true selves have opened up the possibilities. Just because chromosomes determine our biological sex before we even exit the womb does not mean we grow up identifying with that scientific conclusion. People choose to do extraordinary things every day to find that elusive feeling of complete gratification. Choosing our gender is now a viable option.

Every time we venture outside our safe places, we are forced to choose who we want the world to see.
